Howard Geiner has quietly moved up the ranks at CrossFit Talon, putting up big scores on the board and joining in on our LuRong Living Paleo Challenges and the Music City Box League. Here are his own words describing his CrossFit Talon experience:
“My introduction to Crossfit probably sounds a lot like many others…it started with two friends talking at a dinner party about WODs, double-unders, muscle-ups, AMRAPs, Chippers and a whole host of other code words. They also spoke badly about a lady named Karen…seems not many people liked her. Nonetheless I was intrigued and wanted to know more. After a brief overview of the world of CrossFit, my interest level was piqued. The combination of cardio and strength training sounded great and was exactly what I was looking for. And best of all, there was a CrossFit class the next morning(Saturday) and I was invited to go and give it a try. So, after finishing my fifth glass of wine(uh oh), I went home excited about what was to come.
And what was to come has, in many ways, changed my life. Almost two years and well over 200 classes later, CrossFit, and more specifically, the CrossFit Talon community has become an important part of my life. Each morning I set my alarm at 4:45am anxious to see the Facebook post of the morning’s training regimen (a.k.a., WOD from Dennis). I use CrossFit as my foundation for each day…pushing myself to my physical limits and feeling a sense of accomplishment as I then start my work day.
But like most accomplishments, they don’t come without some sacrifice, dedication, perseverance and, just to make sure you’re still breathing, a little bit of pain. From the beginning I have been dealing with lower back issues. Instead of throwing in the towel and calling it quits, the Talon staff has helped me to manage through my cycles of discomfort. Most importantly, they have taught me the proper form for movements and will provide feedback for when I am executing properly as well as when my form breaks down. Without their support and guidance, this CrossFitter would have been a short-timer. Instead, I competed in my first CrossFit tournament last year in addition to both LuRong Challenges in 2013 and the Music City Box League. I have also adopted a Paleo lifestyle thanks to the encouragement of CrossFit Talon. In all, I am living a healthier life. And at 47, it’s an investment in time and effort that will pay dividends in the long-run. Thanks CrossFit Talon for helping me make a difference in my life. And since it’s the New Year, and CrossFit Talon encourages goal-settting, here it goes…five unbroken muscle-ups by February 15.”
